In autumn 2022, we set up three farmlets- one with a diverse species mix (diverse), one with a chicory/plantain/clover mix (herb) and one with a ryegrass/clover (conventional) mix. We collected baseline data on soil carbon, fertility, visual soil assessments and water infiltration prior to the start. We are running each of these as close to the ideal as we can. The diverse farmlet is on daily shifts and is grazed with cattle, the other two are basically on twice weekly shifts. Initially the herb was grazed with cull ewes and their twin lambs and the conventional was grazed with finishing lambs. Once the lambs and ewes were sold the herb was grazed with weaned lambs and the conventional with young cattle. We are measuring soil carbon, water infiltration rates, pasture production and quality and animal performance
