Measuring soil carbon
Soil carbons are measured using 600mm cores. Each core is then divided into 100mm segments down the core.
Measuring dry matter production on plots
Each month plots are harvested at either 8 or 20 cm. The amount of forage harvested is recorded and then a subsample is dried so that we can calculate dry matter production. Seasonally we also collect a sample for Brix and chemical composition
Measuring water infiltration rates
Water infiltration rates are measured by adding a known amount of water and timing how long it takes for the water to disappear. This is repeated three times. We do these measures on a range of studies.
About our property
It is a 295 ha property with an average annual rainfall of around 750mm. Daily rainfall data has been collected since 1904 and pasture production has been measured by harvesting in the same paddocks on a monthly basis since 1999. The farm is generally summer dry...
Start Farmlet studies
In autumn 2022, we set up three farmlets- one with a diverse species mix (diverse), one with a chicory/plantain/clover mix (herb) and one with a ryegrass/clover (conventional) mix. We collected baseline data on soil carbon, fertility, visual soil assessments and water...
January 2023 update
Welcome to our page. Now that our project has been running a couple of years we want to start letting you know what we are doing. Our project is examining the effect of residual pasture left, pasture composition, form of added nutrients (fertiliser) and grazing...
